Queens is the one outer borough with no toll between it and Nostrand Avenue, and almost nobody says so out loud. From Staten Island there is a bridge with a price on it. From New Jersey there are two. From Queens there is a borough line and nothing else. That changes what a second quote is worth, because the only thing it costs you is the drive — and the drive is shorter than most Queens drivers assume.
Southeast Queens: the Belt Parkway, and when not to use it
From Howard Beach, Ozone Park, Richmond Hill and Jamaica the Belt Parkway west is the obvious move — exit at Flatbush Avenue or Knapp Street and come up through Marine Park, 25 to 35 minutes off-peak. The Belt is also the first road in the city to seize up, so between 4pm and 7pm westbound, Linden Boulevard through East New York into Flatlands is genuinely faster even though it looks slower on the map.
Central and northern Queens: the Jackie Robinson beats the BQE
From Forest Hills, Rego Park, Elmhurst and Flushing, take the Jackie Robinson Parkway to Atlantic Avenue, then Eastern Parkway to Bedford or Nostrand and straight down. Allow 30 to 40 minutes. The BQE looks more direct on a map from Astoria and Long Island City, and it very rarely is; the Kosciuszko to Atlantic is the more reliable version of the same trip.
The last mile is the same for everyone
However you come, you finish on Nostrand Avenue heading south. Brooklyn College is the landmark to watch for: we are about half a mile beyond it, on the right-hand side. If you reach Kings Highway you have gone too far and need to double back — worth knowing, because route apps regularly overshoot the entrance.
