2027 Kia Sorento: Trims, MPG, Pricing and Release Timing for New York City Drivers
Published August 12, 2026 · Last updated October 27, 2026
The Sorento fills a slot almost nobody else builds for anymore: a three-row SUV that still parks like a two-row one. In a city where the gap between a legal spot and a ticket is about eight inches, that matters — and it is one of the very few midsize SUVs you can buy as a gas car, a hybrid or a plug-in.
What's changing on the 2027 Kia Sorento?
Not much on the gas side, and this is not a freshening. Kia has now published 2027 pricing for the whole lineup. This generation arrived for 2021 and was substantially reworked for 2024; the styling and engines carry over, but the electrified lineup has been reshuffled:
- A new green. Jade Black Green replaces Jungle Green in the color palette.
- Prices rise $200 on every gas trim. The destination charge stays at $1,495.
- A new Hybrid X-Line EX. The hybrid gains an X-Line EX AWD trim at $43,090, between the Hybrid EX and the Hybrid X-Line SX-Prestige.
- One plug-in trim only. The cheaper Plug-in Hybrid EX is gone; the X-Line SX-Prestige AWD at $53,890 is now the only Sorento PHEV.
- Standard head-up display on the Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid SX-Prestige, plus HEV tailgate badging on the hybrid, and Pale Gray replaces Steel Gray.
The shape of the lineup is not in doubt: a 2.5-liter gas four in two states of tune, a self-charging 1.6-liter turbo hybrid, and a plug-in hybrid. All three return for 2027 with the same three-row layout and paired panoramic displays. One trim note matters before you shop: the X-Pro, with its 4,500-pound tow rating, is gasoline only.
Where the 2027 information stands. All prices on this page are official 2027 Kia MSRPs for the gas, Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid Sorento, published by Kia; Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid pricing was announced on October 15. Powertrains carry over unchanged, so EPA estimates match the 2026 ratings.
How the gas, hybrid and plug-in Sorento compare
Inside, they look nearly identical: paired 12.3-inch displays, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, the same seating layouts. The difference is under the floor. The gas Sorento runs an eight-speed automatic with the 191-hp base engine and an eight-speed dual-clutch with the 281-hp turbo. The hybrid makes 227 hp and 258 lb-ft through a conventional six-speed automatic — unusual among hybrids, most of which rely on a CVT, and the reason this one shifts like a normal car instead of droning.
Which to choose: mostly city driving, take the hybrid. Towing or highway-heavy miles, the turbo gas car. With a driveway, garage outlet or workplace charger, the plug-in and its 31 electric miles become interesting; with street parking only, they do not, and we will tell you that rather than sell you one.
When is the 2027 Kia Sorento release date?
Kia has published 2027 Sorento pricing, and the changeover is under way. Because it is a carryover year, 2027 Sorentos arrive alongside remaining 2026 stock from late 2026 into early 2027, and the two are mechanically identical.
How allocation usually moves. Gas trims typically arrive first, with hybrid and plug-in allocation weeks behind. Tell us the trim, drivetrain and color and we will flag the first matching unit assigned to us, no deposit, no obligation.
Before you fix a budget: the weeks a new model year is announced are often the best weeks to buy the outgoing one. Check Kia incentives and our lease deals to see whether a 2026 already wins the math.
Will the 2027 Kia Sorento cost more?
Barely. Every 2027 gas trim costs $200 more than in 2026. The lineup opens at $32,590 for the LX and tops out at $47,990 for the X-Pro SX-Prestige, before the $1,495 destination charge. With destination and New York City's 8.875% sales tax, an LX comes to about $37,110 before registration and dealer fees. Since nothing else changed on the gas side, a leftover 2026 at a discount is the same SUV for less.
The Hybrid runs from $39,090 for the EX FWD to $47,590 for the X-Line SX-Prestige AWD. The Plug-in Hybrid now comes in one trim only, the X-Line SX-Prestige AWD at $53,890: $400 more than last year's equivalent, but with the Plug-in Hybrid EX gone, the cheapest way into a Sorento PHEV costs $5,600 more than the 2026 EX AWD did.
What moves your payment most is the powertrain, and one number is worth circling: the front-drive Hybrid EX at $39,090 sits just $400 above the gas EX at $38,690 and returns roughly ten more combined mpg. For a family driving mostly inside the city, that is the easiest hybrid decision in the segment.
Your trade is the other lever: a trade-in value done early regularly closes the gap between a gas trim and the hybrid on its own.
2027 Kia Sorento gas trims compared
Eight gas trims, two engines. Prices are 2027 MSRP and exclude the $1,495 destination charge.
| Trim | Engine | Drive | 2027 MSRP | vs 2026 | EPA mpg (city/hwy/comb.) | What it adds |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| LX | 2.5L, 191 hp, 8-speed auto | FWD | $32,590 | +$200 | 23 / 31 / 26 | Value entry and the best gas mileage |
| S | 2.5L, 191 hp, 8-speed auto | FWD or AWD | $35,490 FWD $37,490 AWD | +$200 | 23 / 31 / 26 FWD | Family equipment with the thrifty engine |
| EX | 2.5L turbo, 281 hp, 8-speed DCT | FWD or AWD | $38,690 FWD $40,190 AWD | +$200 | 20–22 / 27–29 / 23–25 | The sweet spot: turbo power, AWD available |
| SX | 2.5L turbo, 281 hp | FWD | $42,490 | +$200 | 22 / 29 / 25 | Bose audio, heated steering wheel, sunshades |
| X-Line EX | 2.5L turbo, 281 hp | AWD standard | $42,990 | +$200 | 20 / 27 / 23 | Rugged look, AWD and Terrain Mode |
| X-Line SX | 2.5L turbo, 281 hp | AWD standard | $44,290 | +$200 | 20 / 27 / 23 | SX content with all-weather hardware |
| X-Line SX-Prestige | 2.5L turbo, 281 hp | AWD standard | $46,990 | +$200 | 20 / 27 / 23 | Leather, dual displays, full assist suite |
| X-Pro SX-Prestige | 2.5L turbo, 281 hp | AWD standard | $47,990 | +$200 | 20 / 27 / 23 | All-terrain tires, 4,500-lb tow rating |
Two details are easy to miss. The plain SX is front-drive only, so an SX buyer who wants AWD moves to the X-Line SX. And Terrain Mode is standard on every all-wheel-drive trim.
2027 Kia Sorento Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid trims compared
Same 1.6-liter turbo hybrid system and six-speed automatic, with an estimated 655 miles of range in Hybrid EX front-drive form. Four hybrid trims for 2027, including the new X-Line EX, and a single plug-in trim. The plug-in makes 268 hp and 270 lb-ft combined and adds an EPA-estimated 31 miles of electric-only driving. Prices exclude the $1,495 destination charge.
| Trim | Powertrain | Drive | 2027 MSRP | EPA estimate | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hybrid EX | 1.6L turbo hybrid, 227 hp / 258 lb-ft | FWD | $39,090 | 37 / 36 / 37 mpg | Efficiency leader, about 655 miles per tank; $400 over the gas EX |
| Hybrid EX AWD | 1.6L turbo hybrid, 227 hp | AWD | $40,890 | 32 / 35 / 34 mpg | Winter traction, about 602 miles per tank |
| Hybrid X-Line EX New | 1.6L turbo hybrid, 227 hp | AWD standard | $43,090 | AWD hybrid rating; confirm for this trim | New for 2027: X-Line styling and AWD at EX money |
| Hybrid X-Line SX-Prestige | 1.6L turbo hybrid, 227 hp | AWD standard | $47,590 | 32 / 35 / 34 mpg | Leather, ventilated seats, dual displays, now with a standard head-up display |
| Plug-in Hybrid X-Line SX-Prestige | 1.6L turbo plug-in hybrid, 268 hp / 270 lb-ft combined | AWD standard | $53,890 +$400 | 31 electric miles, 74 MPGe, 33 mpg as a hybrid | The only 2027 PHEV trim; standard head-up display; Level 1 / Level 2 cable included |
Which Sorento fits which New Yorker
- Hybrid EX FWD — the sharpest choice for a family that rarely leaves the city. About $400 over the gas EX, roughly ten more combined mpg.
- Hybrid EX AWD — the winter answer, still 34 combined.
- Hybrid X-Line EX — new for 2027: the rugged X-Line look and standard AWD for $2,200 over the Hybrid EX AWD.
- LX or S — if the SUV mostly sits during the week and the lowest price matters most.
- EX or X-Line gas — for highway-heavy miles and turbo punch on parkway merges.
- X-Pro SX-Prestige — for the household with a trailer or a place upstate.
- Plug-in Hybrid — only with a driveway, garage outlet or workplace charger, such as a house in Bayside or on Staten Island. With the EX gone, it now starts at $53,890, $6,300 above the Hybrid X-Line SX-Prestige, so the 31 electric miles need to cover most of your daily driving to pay off.
Three rows, and the details that earn their keep
The Sorento seats six with second-row captain's chairs or seven with the bench. The third row is genuinely usable for kids and for adults on shorter trips — it is not a Telluride's third row, and pretending otherwise helps nobody. What it does brilliantly is disappear: 75.5 cubic feet behind the front seats, 45.0 behind the second row, 12.6 behind the third.
Then the details that prove themselves after months of ownership: wireless charging up front, USB-C fast charging for the rows behind you, and real buttons left in place around the shifter. That last one is not nostalgia — reaching for a physical control at 25 mph on a street shared with cyclists and delivery bikes beats hunting through a menu.
Awards and recent Kia news
The Sorento wins consistently where value is the measured category. U.S. News & World Report named it Best Midsize Three-Row SUV for the Money and the Sorento Hybrid Best Midsize Hybrid SUV for the Money in its 2026 Best Cars for the Money awards, one of seven Kia models recognized.
On safety, the 2026 Sorento and Sorento Hybrid both earned the IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK+, its highest designation, under criteria the institute keeps tightening; the award covers vehicles built after September 2025.
Behind it sits the warranty that built the brand: 10 years or 100,000 miles of powertrain coverage with hybrid components included, plus 5 years or 60,000 miles basic, both limited. Kia also appears on TIME's World's Most Sustainable Companies list, is the official automotive partner of the NBA and WNBA, and has been setting U.S. sales records through 2026.
Why the Sorento works for New York drivers
- It parks like a two-row. At just under sixteen feet, the Sorento is about eight inches shorter than a full-size three-row — the difference between the spot in front of your building and circling for twenty minutes.
- Hybrid economics are a city story. The hybrid is most efficient exactly where traffic is worst, and 37 combined mpg in front-drive form is real money every month.
- Winter traction is on the menu. AWD is available across gas, hybrid and plug-in versions, with Terrain Mode standard on every AWD trim.
- A cargo van when you need one. The third row folds flat for a furniture run and comes back when the cousins visit.
- Remote start earns its keep. Kia Connect starts the car and sets the cabin temperature before you leave the apartment — in February and after a day baking on an open street in August.
The honest caveats are height and plugs. Plenty of Manhattan and Queens garages post height limits in the low six-foot range, so measure yours against a Sorento with roof rails first. And a plug-in you never plug in is just a heavier, pricier hybrid. Something smaller? Price out a Sportage Hybrid or Seltos. One size up, the Telluride and its first-ever hybrid; for sliding doors, the Carnival; for a sedan, our K5 and K4 guides. We would rather you buy the right one.
