2027 Kia Sorento: Trims, MPG, Pricing and Release Timing for New York City Drivers
Published August 12, 2026 · Last updated September 16, 2026
The Sorento fills a slot almost nobody else builds for anymore: a three-row SUV that still parks like a two-row one. In a city where the gap between a legal spot and a ticket is about eight inches, that matters — and it is one of the very few midsize SUVs you can buy as a gas car, a hybrid or a plug-in.
What's changing on the 2027 Kia Sorento?
Kia has not detailed it yet, and the industry expects continuation rather than reinvention. This generation arrived for 2021 and was substantially reworked for 2024, and the enthusiast press points toward a freshening — revised fascias, new wheels and colors, some trim reshuffling — rather than a clean-sheet replacement.
The shape of the lineup is not in doubt: a 2.5-liter gas four in two states of tune, a self-charging 1.6-liter turbo hybrid, and a plug-in hybrid. Nothing suggests any of them is leaving, and the 2027 assets already reaching dealers — including the photography on this page — show the same three-row layout and paired panoramic displays. One trim note matters before you shop: the X-Pro, with its 4,500-pound tow rating, is gasoline only.
Where the 2027 information stands. Kia has not published official 2027 Sorento trims, pricing or EPA data. Every figure marked 2026 below is exactly that — confirmed current-model-year data used as the baseline. Where something is expected rather than announced, we say so, and this page updates the day official numbers land.
How the gas, hybrid and plug-in Sorento compare
Inside, they look nearly identical: paired 12.3-inch displays, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, the same seating layouts. The difference is under the floor. The gas Sorento runs an eight-speed automatic with the 191-hp base engine and an eight-speed dual-clutch with the 281-hp turbo. The hybrid makes 227 hp and 258 lb-ft through a conventional six-speed automatic — unusual among hybrids, most of which rely on a CVT, and the reason this one shifts like a normal car instead of droning.
Which to choose: mostly city driving, take the hybrid. Towing or highway-heavy miles, the turbo gas car. With a driveway, garage outlet or workplace charger, the plug-in and its roughly 30 electric miles become interesting; with street parking only, they do not, and we will tell you that rather than sell you one.
When is the 2027 Kia Sorento release date?
Kia has not announced it yet. The pattern is consistent, though: Kia posted 2026 Sorento pricing on September 22, 2025, the Hybrid on September 23 and the plug-in on September 24 — a late-September cadence that has held for years. Expect 2027 Sorentos at dealers from late 2026 into early 2027.
How allocation usually moves. Gas trims typically arrive first, with hybrid and plug-in allocation weeks behind. Tell us the trim, drivetrain and color and we will flag the first matching unit assigned to us, no deposit, no obligation.
Before you fix a budget: the weeks a new model year is announced are often the best weeks to buy the outgoing one. Check Kia incentives and our lease deals to see whether a 2026 already wins the math.
Will the 2027 Kia Sorento cost more?
Probably, but modestly. Model-year pricing on a carryover vehicle tends to move a few hundred dollars, not a few thousand, and the Sorento's whole argument rests on undercutting larger three-rows. On 2026 pricing the gas lineup opens at $32,390 and the Hybrid at $38,890 before the $1,495 destination charge, and the plug-in hybrid at $48,290 before its $1,445 destination charge.
What moves your payment most is the powertrain, and one number is worth circling: the front-drive Hybrid EX sits about $400 above the gas EX and returns roughly ten more combined mpg. For a family driving mostly inside the city, that is the easiest hybrid decision in the segment.
Your trade is the other lever: a trade-in value done early regularly closes the gap between a gas trim and the hybrid on its own.
2027 Kia Sorento gas trims compared
Eight gas trims, two engines. Prices are 2026 MSRP and exclude the $1,495 destination charge.
| Trim | Engine | Drive | MSRP (2026) | EPA mpg (city/hwy/comb.) | What it adds |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| LX | 2.5L, 191 hp, 8-speed auto | FWD | $32,390 | 23 / 31 / 26 | Value entry and the best gas mileage |
| S | 2.5L, 191 hp, 8-speed auto | FWD or AWD | $35,290 FWD $37,290 AWD | 23 / 31 / 26 FWD | Family equipment with the thrifty engine |
| EX | 2.5L turbo, 281 hp, 8-speed DCT | FWD or AWD | $38,490 FWD $39,990 AWD | 20–22 / 27–29 / 23–25 | The sweet spot: turbo power, AWD available |
| SX | 2.5L turbo, 281 hp | FWD | $42,290 | 22 / 29 / 25 | Bose audio, heated steering wheel, sunshades |
| X-Line EX | 2.5L turbo, 281 hp | AWD standard | $42,790 | 20 / 27 / 23 | Rugged look, AWD and Terrain Mode |
| X-Line SX | 2.5L turbo, 281 hp | AWD standard | $44,090 | 20 / 27 / 23 | SX content with all-weather hardware |
| X-Line SX-Prestige | 2.5L turbo, 281 hp | AWD standard | $46,790 | 20 / 27 / 23 | Leather, dual displays, full assist suite |
| X-Pro SX-Prestige | 2.5L turbo, 281 hp | AWD standard | $47,790 | 20 / 27 / 23 | All-terrain tires, 4,500-lb tow rating |
Two details are easy to miss. The plain SX is front-drive only, so an SX buyer who wants AWD moves to the X-Line SX. And Terrain Mode is standard on every all-wheel-drive trim.
2027 Kia Sorento Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid trims compared
Same 1.6-liter turbo hybrid system and six-speed automatic, with an estimated 655 miles of range in Hybrid EX front-drive form. The plug-in adds about 30 miles of electric-only driving.
| Trim | Powertrain | Drive | MSRP (2026) | EPA mpg (city/hwy/comb.) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hybrid EX | 1.6L turbo hybrid, 227 hp / 258 lb-ft | FWD | $38,890 | 37 / 36 / 37 | Efficiency leader, about 655 miles per tank |
| Hybrid EX AWD | 1.6L turbo hybrid, 227 hp | AWD | $40,690 | 32 / 35 / 34 | Winter traction, about 602 miles per tank |
| Hybrid SX-Prestige / X-Line SX-Prestige | 1.6L turbo hybrid, 227 hp | AWD standard | $47,190 | 32 / 35 / 34 | Leather, ventilated seats, dual displays |
| Plug-in Hybrid EX | 1.6L turbo plug-in hybrid | AWD standard | $48,290 | About 30 electric miles, then hybrid | Short commutes on electricity — if you can plug in |
| Plug-in Hybrid X-Line SX-Prestige | 1.6L turbo plug-in hybrid | AWD standard | $53,490 | About 30 electric miles | Flagship; Level 1 / Level 2 cable included |
Which Sorento fits which New Yorker
- Hybrid EX FWD — the sharpest choice for a family that rarely leaves the city. About $400 over the gas EX, roughly ten more combined mpg.
- Hybrid EX AWD — the winter answer, still 34 combined.
- LX or S — if the SUV mostly sits during the week and the lowest price matters most.
- EX or X-Line gas — for highway-heavy miles and turbo punch on parkway merges.
- X-Pro SX-Prestige — for the household with a trailer or a place upstate.
- Plug-in Hybrid — only with a driveway, garage outlet or workplace charger, such as a house in Bayside or on Staten Island.
Three rows, and the details that earn their keep
The Sorento seats six with second-row captain's chairs or seven with the bench. The third row is genuinely usable for kids and for adults on shorter trips — it is not a Telluride's third row, and pretending otherwise helps nobody. What it does brilliantly is disappear: 75.5 cubic feet behind the front seats, 45.0 behind the second row, 12.6 behind the third.
Then the details that prove themselves after months of ownership: wireless charging up front, USB-C fast charging for the rows behind you, and real buttons left in place around the shifter. That last one is not nostalgia — reaching for a physical control at 25 mph on a street shared with cyclists and delivery bikes beats hunting through a menu.
Awards and recent Kia news
The Sorento wins consistently where value is the measured category. U.S. News & World Report named it Best Midsize Three-Row SUV for the Money and the Sorento Hybrid Best Midsize Hybrid SUV for the Money in its 2026 Best Cars for the Money awards, one of seven Kia models recognized.
On safety, the 2026 Sorento and Sorento Hybrid both earned the IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK+, its highest designation, under criteria the institute keeps tightening; the award covers vehicles built after September 2025.
Behind it sits the warranty that built the brand: 10 years or 100,000 miles of powertrain coverage with hybrid components included, plus 5 years or 60,000 miles basic, both limited. Kia also appears on TIME's World's Most Sustainable Companies list, is the official automotive partner of the NBA and WNBA, and has been setting U.S. sales records through 2026.
Why the Sorento works for New York drivers
- It parks like a two-row. At just under sixteen feet, the Sorento is about eight inches shorter than a full-size three-row — the difference between the spot in front of your building and circling for twenty minutes.
- Hybrid economics are a city story. The hybrid is most efficient exactly where traffic is worst, and 37 combined mpg in front-drive form is real money every month.
- Winter traction is on the menu. AWD is available across gas, hybrid and plug-in versions, with Terrain Mode standard on every AWD trim.
- A cargo van when you need one. The third row folds flat for a furniture run and comes back when the cousins visit.
- Remote start earns its keep. Kia Connect starts the car and sets the cabin temperature before you leave the apartment — in February and after a day baking on an open street in August.
The honest caveats are height and plugs. Plenty of Manhattan and Queens garages post height limits in the low six-foot range, so measure yours against a Sorento with roof rails first. And a plug-in you never plug in is just a heavier, pricier hybrid. Something smaller? Price out a Sportage Hybrid or Seltos. One size up, the Telluride and its first-ever hybrid; for sliding doors, the Carnival; for a sedan, our K5 and K4 guides. We would rather you buy the right one.
Cross-shop the whole segment without moving your car
Every rival in this segment is a sidewalk away. Drive the Sorento back to back with the Toyota Highlander or Highlander Hybrid, park it beside its mechanical cousin the Hyundai Santa Fe or Santa Fe Hybrid, size it against the larger Palisade, or test whether an EV like the IONIQ 9 fits your charging reality. Honda's entries are covered in our 2027 Pilot, 2027 Passport and 2027 CR-V Hybrid guides. Want something plusher? Acura of Brooklyn is on the same block. On a budget? Browse the group used inventory.
